He couldn't handle the Truth
The Rat King seems to be a separate eldritch entity to the Cute Kitty. A more conventional existential horror, of forbidden Truths and malicious rage.
Clearly inferior to the great, amorphous black void of CAT that desires only sweets, scritches, and playing around with it's human pet-friend
