She has had the most influence in the story so far and without her, most of the characters would be the typical trope "useless lesbian" we see in yuri/shoujo-ai so oft.

It's nice that Riri doesn't want to start a new relationship as a mean to forget the previous one. Her feelings are there and true, but, as she realized, she can sort these final thoughts and reach Uda with newfound and "clean" feelings.

That kind of means it needed to end. Felt like ideas were running a bit dry, leading to that forced plot (and character) that got resolved very suddenly anyway. Better to end on a higher note. It still makes that detour feel kind of wasteful but at least it didn't linger.
