It's complicated. She's the protags estranged biological sister. He was kicked out of the family at a young due to shenanigans and fate conspired against the protag when she tried to rescue her from being overwritten? But ultimately failed to achieve her goal of saving her from the machinations of her family.
Didnt she call him father because he somehow brainwashed her? She kept saying how she was trying to snap out of it before her whole "get her sister" quest came up.It's complicated.
Plot logic is not one of the strong points of the author. Though possibly the fault lies with the WN -> manga translation.
- She's Ji Yue. She's the "sister" of Ji Bai courtesy of Ji Bai's adoption into the Ji family. [Assuming that "Ji" is the family name.] However, he was later expelled from that family, so she's not his sister anymore.
- ...
- Basic theme is that all of the races are striving to recapture the abilities/power that they held in an earlier age.
- (Meanwhile Cthullu god just wants to sow chaos and destruction. The cultists who serve him are called "Patriarchs".)
- Part of that striving for power is to reincarnate rules from earlier eras into someone from today.
- Yanna's plan was to get her sister (Queen Solanya from second era) reincarnated into Bai Ji. But Bai Ji resisted, thus acquiring Solanya's skills, but retaining Bai Ji's personality. (Mostly? Seems like Bai Ji changed a little.)
- Similarly, the human/Gulan leaders wanted Ji Yue to become the reincarnation of a previous second(?) era Gulan king. That has partially, but not completely happened. (BTW, the leaders killed/sacrificed a bunch of people in order to make this happen.)
- Part of the "kingship" was being a dictatorial, power seeking, non-empathetic ass.
- And that's why Ji Bai was exiled from the family -- because Ji Yue was too emotionally involved with him. And that would interfere with her becoming ancient king's reincarnation.
- Ji Bai should have made some effort to contact his sister during this time. (IMO) But yeah, he never did until she was about to be married to the jerk we're seeing here.
- After a while Ji Yue got stuffed into the ascension ritual. Ji Bai tried to interfere, but at that point, Yanna (intent on getting Queen Solanya reincarnated), mind-controls Ji Bai, forcing him to transform to Bai Ji in front of Ji Yue and to attack Ji Yue. (Thus making it look like a traitor who has always been a vampire.)
- Later, in a similar encounter, Yanna MCs Ji Bai and makes the same thing happen again.
- In short Yanna screwed up Ji Bae's relationship with this adoptive sister and pushed Ji Yue to accept the ascension/reincarnation process.
- (And it's unclear how much Yanna was acting under "Father" (Potion Master Cultist) directions and how much she was acting on her own initiative. And it's unclear how much Lilias was involved in this attempt to resurrect Solanya.)
- And we have no idea why Yanna (who dates back to second era) called Potion Master Cultist "Father".
But then she calls in "dear [Father]" again in 285. Now maybe she's unbrainwashed and sarcastically calling him "Father", but it's not clear. [Okay, I've updated that bit in my earlier post.]Didnt she call him father because he somehow brainwashed her? She kept saying how she was trying to snap out of it before her whole "get her sister" quest came up.
Edit: just reread ch 234 and she indeed was brainwashed.
She does call him it sarcastically imo. She seems very aware and angry that she was messed with. But then she calls in "dear [Father]" again in 285. Now maybe she's unbrainwashed and sarcastically calling him "Father", but it's not clear. [Okay, I've updated that bit in my earlier post.]
From what she said (when bai ji came out of the blood pool that hosted a fragment of her sister) is that she didnt care if she wasnt a 1:1 of her sister. She only cared that bai ji had that small piece of her sister that was inherited from the pool. She loved her sister that much and is satisfied with even the bare minimum. At least thats what I got out of it.Of course, she keeps calling Bai Ji "sister" -- and I'm just not clear whether she knows that Bai Ji is not her sister. (Unless, maybe Bai Ji has a chunk of Solanya? Or maybe she's calling Bai Ji "sister" even though she knows that Bai Ji isn't Solanya. It's probably that last one, but it's unclear.)
