And it's looking more like 'Mama' is some kind of super-fungus organism that infects people to turn them into loyal servants. Doesn't seem like you can beat the health care though.

One theory of mine is that those cavemen are like Leafcutter ants. These famous ants carry a unique type of fungus that is said to be one of the oldest. The ants are the only one be able to nurture and care for the fungus, and the fungus feeds them food, a co-exist that collapses when one side dies, you can't find this fungus anywhere else, making it like an alien. This ant also build massive kingdom underground with one of the most complex social structures ever.
Think about it, these guys are like springtails (most ants ignore them; they do wander inside the nest), and cavemen are ants, feeding the fungus system to trade for food, the underground ant kingdom can be like this cave, which clearly has deep tunnels.
