There's a reason cliches are well, cliche. I don't personally mind the effective use of tropes in something lighthearted and "easy" like this. It fits the overarching "insecurity" theme, so eh, whatever. Using a trope is almost unavoidable for the majority of literature, kind of how filmmakers have largely run out of original ideas for scripts, but EFFECTIVE and appropriate use is still appreciated.
