The story is kinda going in circles.
I really hope he isn't evil. Finding out that he was just a victim of his own family and realizing he was really just trying to save her in the past life is what I've thought it was. However, it might also be that he doesn't think he can go against his own family, so he's instead scheming just to 'save' her and sacrificing the rest.
