Don't tell me the entire reason he was trying to get her to surrender and be a part of his entourage, specifically, was because he knew she'd lose, and because he was in love with her, wanted to avoid her death? Gahh, the clichés, they burn!

Alternatively, heartbreak is what made him turn on her (maybe learning she has a fiancé makes him a lil' bitter?), guess we'll see
