Yaaay, the second season started!
The first one was enjoyable, if a tad basic. I still can't get over the fact we were never graced with learning the names of Helena's parents: they are literally called "Helena's Father" (or, the Duke) and "Helena's Mother". Even a random valet who only got like two lines in the entire season received his own name, but not her direct family members she claims to be oh so very fond of...
Now that I think about it, there aren't that many prominent characters at all, are there? The Crown Prince, her brother Leonard, her maid Agoth, Caesar's aides Hamilton and Rowena, the Empress, and Julika (her "rival" from the Empress faction). Others seem to make an episodic appearance at best, and I'm sort of left wondering... what were we even doing these past 34 chapters?
Well, one can say it was all just a prologue, and I'll be the first one to declare I hate spending entire seasons looking at overly mature kids with deadpan expressions and sudden bouts of otherworldly wisdom. So, we had our time skips, a little bit of foreshadowing (with that shady priest guy and the rumours of a dragon worshipping cult, I'd assume), and maybe a tiny crumb of character growth as well. Good enough, haha.
Helena herself is a little inconsistent, in my opinion. I'd get it if she still thought and behaved like Dante while slowly morphing into a new, mellower version of herself. But at least with Caesar, she's blushing and stammering one day, and vehemently denying any attempts to dominate her the other, which... happens to all of us, I suppose. Maybe the time skips are making her growth feel more fragmented than it would've been otherwise.
All in all, I'd love to see more of Leonard (he never gets any crowning moments nor a chance to display character, does he) and Julika (unexpected, I know, but female friendships are rare in this genre which only makes me crave them more). We'll probably see more of the core storyline unraveling in Season 2, but our leads' relationship is in no danger. Which is a shame, because I think it would've been worth exploring how Helena's "Emperor" mindset might make her struggle with adapting and compromising.
