It's kinda sad that Carson and the others have been shaped by the orphanage's bad education. In a place where the adults don't care about the children under their care, ofc some of them would turn violent and bully others to make sure they don't get bullied themselves, and they would become hostile towards each other when the adults try to blame a kid for THEIR mistakes (aka gambling and child neglect).
Bullying is not acceptable, and Carson's behavior as well, but the orphanage is doing nothing to educate them about what's right or wrong.

Yeah, I actually feel super bad for Carson in these early chapters. From his perspective, all these punishments he suffers seem so unfair. He's not really learning what he did wrong or why, he's just having bad things happen to him. As a child.
