After page four I knew it wasn't gonna be a happy end.
And I have never been so happy to be wrong about something before.

reminds me of whining that ending of samurai jack is no good and they should have inserted one miracle there at the very end.
Wait, if between human and a bird, is it bestiality or low bestiality?

Kinda reminds me of the feelings of old fairy tales from my childhood. I can totally see it being adapted by Disney.

Is it perhaps because the doctor was so mean to the bird that she kinda didn't deserve her, and/or didn't have enough time on panel to reflect and grow?

"Oh yeah she helped people but she's also a lonely weirdo who lives alone, so screw her" Well, I guess that's why she came to form that opinion of people. Although, her words are definitely at odds with how she goes out of her way to help those who need it.

Thank god it didn't end like that one fable of the cat turning into a human girl.

@icekatze There was that one page where she apologizes to her for everything she said. Her harsh words are also pretty empty for how kindly she treated Neru and her other human patients in spite of "hating humans".

@icekatze I see... yes, I think that's what I feel. The doctor still hates humans, and the only reason she doesn't hate birdy anymore is because she's not a human.
Tersione also has a point, the doctor's hate against humans feels very superficial with how she's acting.

But most importantly, it's breaking the trope where the little birdy is supposed to die in vain like the Little Mermaid.

I'm not saying I dislike the ending myself, but I did kinda feel like the doctor's feelings could have been explored in more depth. There was the one page where she apologizes, and it's enough to satisfy the narrative, but I feel like another page or two exploring how the doctor really feels deep down would have given her change of heart more weight. (Not that I'm meaning to criticize the story, it's just that it might be why people don't quite empathize with the doctor and might have thought she deserved the bad end.)

@Aoitenshi
Although I don't think it would work as a series, it does seem like they didn't get much time to dig very far past superficial feelings. Perhaps a two parter might have been enough?

I suppose you could still have sort of a happy ending if the birdy died, then the doctor died and they both got reincarnated as birds. (And then the people in the town would have realized their mistake for being so mean, once they lost their doctor.)
