Kirei was always quality, always slow and "busy" and always, inevitably, "taking care of their sick mother" for years on end. You know what the problem is though, you're just failing to acknowledge it: culture of snipe shunning.
Snipers will be shunned. That is the nature of the game. If Kirei is sitting on a multitude of series that they don't have the throughput to properly handle - they should relinquish and hand them over amicably. Instead they hoard like Reaper once did and they fail to deliver what that hoarding entails.
In other words: active scanlation is an obligation, regardless if it's taken voluntarily for free, done for money or being forced to at gunpoint. There is no moral argument for the work being THIS late or the work being crap quality, because the obligation is to deliver in a reasonable timeline and with reasonable results. If that obligation is not respected by the scanlator, then they don't deserve the respect that they garner by doing it for free.
If someone offers to renovate my roof for free and then stops midway and doesn't come back for months or does a job so bad, it leaks and gets infested with fungus - do I have the right to complain or not?
I hate that I have to take so many words to explain why the "it's free so don't complain" is a BS argument that only a BS person would make.
