I'm gonna go with an inferiority complex excacerbated by the way society( their school and maybe parents) has portrayed Chidori. I imagine she might have felt that she wasn't doing as well as she hoped and looked up to Waguri sort of as the top of what one can be and felt she didn't measure up. But at least she was doing better than Chidori. She was a better person and had better grades and all. So then the shock of the reality of the situation is hitting her right now and they're probably gonna work through that in a bit.

Lets gooooooo. I mean it's really sad and an unfortunate reality of the world. Used to think I was the shit as long as I wasn't from the Inner city and then I hit college and these guys were just as smart if not even smarter than I was. Sort of breeds resentment but its a great opportunity for growth and growth that I hope ends with her grades being better.

I love this trope. It's probably a bit mean, but it speaks so much to me; to have your illusions shattered, to have every excuse and petty rationalization cut out from under you, to have the guilt of your false beliefs and prejudices squeeze your heart, until it feels like you're choking on your own arrogance - I love seeing characters go through that. Because it's such an honest reaction! That's what having deep beliefs challenged feels like, at least whenever it's happened to me. It's not a cold, logical, "Oh, I thought A, but the data indicates B. I will now adjust appropriately." No, it feels like an attack. The Semmelweiss reflex, the instinctive anger and denial towards evidence that contradicts your beliefs, is real.

And I don't mean anything negative towards the characters that are experiencing it! On the contrary, I think it's only really shown when characters are, fundamentally, good. Characters that value true beliefs and honest understanding over their own petty pride. One can easily imagine a less decent person ignoring the evidence of their own error and continuing to judge others harshly. That's not what Ayu's doing here; she is accepting all of this with understandable frustration and pain, but accepting it nonetheless. That does take a certain amount of humility, and at the end of this arc she will surely be a better person for it.

If others feel the same, the manga Kono Oto Tomare! has the same trope occur quite often, and is currently going through a similar process with one of the minor characters.

I really want to know how Rintaro will solve this, but... Can the couple have a relaxed and cool vibe time already? There's always something happening, c'mon, breaks and wholesome progression moments are also important, not everything has to be a progression from a trauma or something like that. I just want to see both of them being relaxed near each other already, Kaoruko and Rintaro don't really seem much of a couple, even tho they do love each other very much, their physical and verbal interactions are still kinda of lackluster, as we already saw, both of them would be doing that sort of thing to their friends also, so... There's no much real difference from their status from friends to couple at the moment. Maybe I'm just being picky here cuz I really want to see them in a relaxed environment, or kissing and things like that, but it just seems that, there's always something happening, and always something heavy, maybe it's just me tho.

And please, don't get me wrong, I love this manga very much, and how relationships are portrayed, it's just that I would really like to see wholesome moments for the couple, we got those moments when their friends around, but it's always heavy when it is just the two of them, as there always something happening in their lives. Then again, maybe I'm just being picky and stupid here.
