There's something really cliche and unpleasant when they try to force empathy for the main characters by having a long drawn out display of bad luck and poor situations. If he's really as strong as he's purported to be just getting a job as an elite guard of someone with money and influence or perhaps being a martial teacher would have solved the blatant problem.
