My big issue with this story arc. Is that there is very little to no reason at all to have the competition down all at once. Why not have it done by one person at a time? You avoid the known issue of fighting between students, and you can keep better attention on the current participants.

I was thinking it's because, it's hard to time? Light speed is pretty fast.
