Ah. There it is. The moment the author is working on for a while.
See, during the last fight, MC got too powerful. And then there is the "reward" (growth in power) for completing the infinity function.
So MC's and friends power level got a reset.

• First off was establishing that MC's impressive record in spirit zone fighting was only impressive for class 5 and class 4 doesn't do that anymore (even tho start of the school arc, they did).
• Then (with help of the two new darkness students) was further installed MC was good, but only impressive for class 5, and only good for class 4. Furthermore the savant idiot friend (that at first was installed as insurmountable wall, good enough to graduate) was set to better than average for class 4.
• And now the event at the gate.

Without all that (and given the power levels as they were established first), MC would already be well in the 10th grade completed mage category.

With that our impression will be reset to: impressive for a class 5 student, good for a class 4. But holds no candle to class 3 and above.
