Not gonna lie, I much preferred the idea of it being all real and Black Doom being behind the attack on the ARK instead of it being an illusion and memory manipulation. Made for a more interesting interpretation than "ooooh it was all a dream~" even if it ended up not being canon.

Considering how controversial that plot point was on Twitter (yes, groan) I can see why Imada ultimately did not go through with it. Probably for the best, because the way people still talk about this manga is really annoying (probably because most of them didn't actually read it but I digress).

I called the memory manipulation from the start. Making Black doom the one responsible for the raid would undercut Gerald's story in SA2. Also that wouldn't have helped him. Black doom got lucky that someone woke Shadow up and also stopped him from blowing up the Earth. This is probably the most interesting he's been because has an even more active roll than in the games he's in. Even the little bug eye monster gaining his own agency adds something.

So, he wants to physically integrate with Shadow.. I had thought the other media had at least implied it was a mental integration

Dark Beginnings, it stated everything Shadow the Hedgehog started from a Doom's Eye, that he was built from it's DNA, and that the Time Eater began functioning before the events, as GUN had records, and that Doom's Eye which is just a terminal started moving; the Doom's Eye being active means this is why Doom was aware of the future from whatever time period he was drawn from. Given Shadow's DNA was branched from a Doom's Eye (with whatever changes Gerald made), that means he at least contains whats needed to be a terminal for Doom, plus the fact hes capable of autonomous actions. To me, this all implied that Doom was trying to maximize the Black Arms DNA in him to make his body, which still exists in the future, capable of sustaining Black Doom's existence, and download himself into it. Not sure how well physical integration would do when the time distortion fades.. kinda seems like it would loose a ton of mass instantly, and if it survives loosing all that it would still just be the mental integration
