I've noticed that governments that disarm the populace do not stop at guns. It's funny because any criminal who wants a knife can get one. If everyone is disarmed all you need is a big knife. The other thing is the are very hard on self defense killings. If someone breaks into your house, common sense says it is a logical thought that your life is in danger. In the USA I don't think you would need a background check for any air rifle.

Lol, I ordered my PCP and pump on Amazon and had it in 2 days no questions asked. I think it's like that in all 50 states. Hell, with my carry permit I can run down to my local gun store and be back home with anything .50 or smaller in less than 30 min. Driving included.

Small thing, but you could have reflected the double negative in English too: "It's not like we couldn't afford it if we liquified/sold the gold my mother gave us, but..."

It's not too uncommon an expression in English (heh), and also reflects her hesitancy.
