What if they could arrange a nuclear strike in the location of the meteor impact, just before or after? That would leave far less infected there to benefit from the meteor fragments and metcore. But naturally that would require finding qualified living soldiers from the nuclear branch of the military or suitable engineers from among those who built the things. There might be none left or they could be impossible to locate in the limited time.
