Maybe the intended meaning was "they're doing (only) safe days at their age (instead of more certain protection)"? Though maybe mom likes it raw...

well, even in that one series where it's that "casual friends with benefits" manga (Kou iu ga ii no, i believe?), they tend to use condoms and not birth control pills

Unless they're having sex in the shower or so during, blood would be a pain to clean outta bedsheets as well, just saying (although mess aside i imagine it's risky during a period too rather than waiting right til the day it's over)
