It's not a downplay, a downplay would be "oh a death knight, no big deal", this is "probably not actually a death knight, probably a skeleton knight and as a 1st year you just got confused" which the other elf teacher was also saying. I don't think he's evil, it has kind of been shown so far that the elves a haughty and somewhat bigoted against non-elves and overall assuming even a talented 1st wouldn't escape a powerful monster is not completely unreasonable. Remember these characters don't know what the other characters and those characters don't know everything we know too.

There's no need to guess, it was stated when the pheonix gave away her chick it was meant to go to another person with "apologies to the other contractor" then when this girl is introduced it's stated that her contractor has been hatched and then her contractor was "stolen" after reading a letter with the exact same name as the phoenix followed by "who stole my contractor?" followed by what was basically an invincible title card transition to "Leo", then here she is angry at "Leo Plov" for stealing her contractor. At this point if that wasn't what she was angry about it wouldn't even be misdirection from the author, just straight up lying.

Ahaha, it wouldn't be boring to see these two interacting a lot, his aloof, composed character clashing with her fiery, headstrong one. Maybe not the best combination for any kind of relationship, but surely fun to watch as a bystander.
