What in the actual fuck is the writer smoking
Don’t know, but I have some ideas:
He did apparently win, so I’m assuming the defeating part is being called into question. If memory recalls, she fainted while trying to supercharge a fireball because she didn’t know the limits of her strength. What I assume what happened was that they took the Minecraft approach to defeats of this nature and accredited to defeat to the MC since he was the cause of her defeat (think “Jediweirdo died while trying to escape AnimuVsMango”)
“It was decided that you [the MC] won”
That’s probably because if everything continued the way it was going, he would have been declared the winner due to TKO. Remember— only the MC and 1 of the 5 heroines know of his true intention to throw the battle, and he (apparently) put up a good act. I don’t know why they didn’t just have them rematch instead of immediately making the call, but whatever.
“This quest is difficult, but not impossible”
And
“I can still think of a way to win later”
Probably is him thinking of the main quest after this one. Way back in an earlier chapter, the MC reveals that whether or not he completed the “Win the 1v1” quest determined his role in the next. Whoever loses to Irina plays the role of revenge, where they invade her dorm in the effort of getting revenge. If the MC lost, then
he would be the one who invades her dorm, allowing him to have more flexibility in how he approached the quest. But since he won, some other noble outside his control will be the ones trying to kill Irina and he has to dispose of them before they actually kill her while also seeming like the bad guy. As such, the reward for the 1v1 quest was a honeypot that would make the following quest harder if he takes the bait… which he inevitably ended up doing.
"I'll have you do what you couldn't in the forest"
🤷— your guess is as good as mine
also how would he know what happened in the forest if he supposedly ran away before Irina regained consciousness
This one’s been explained by @guromi95’s comment directly above mine
Hope this clears some stuff up. I’m not a novel reader, so some things could be wrong. I’m going to watch what the MC does in the next quest pretty carefully, since for some reason the MC hinted that whatever he’s plotting requires for every heroine to hate him (which he already failed at) and a magic mind-control stone to work. Whatever happens next will decide whether or not I keep watching this, as I’m still on the fence as-is.
