I assume when the empress asked "how does it feel to be part of the noble family?" it's meant to say "how does it feel to be part of the royal family?" the author made the guy a duke so he's already a noble, in fact in most cases a duke should be considered a royal as they will almost always have married into the royal family at some point.

yeah I was confused by that as well since that was also repeated a bunch of times. So yeah its either royals or maybe the dukedom is somehow not part of the Kingdom and as such not part of its nobility or something. But I think it was just a translation error.

Are you sure it's because they're corrupted and not just dumb as hell? Normal people don't sign a contract saying they can kill you if they wish so and you say "nah, they won't kill me we are friend". Man, this being in the contract is just short of being as blunt as putting a knife against your throat.

Yeah, the only way for that to make a lick of sense would be if the Starlight and the Moonlight families fully autonomous lines (somehow still) wholly unconnected to the nobility of the main state. In this case, marrying her would make him in all likelihood a duke in proper relation. Though, even that would raise a whole mess of other issues and I find this really suspect.
