Now I'm confused why did she let that assassin go. If she just wanted to send a message she didn't need to let that assassin go and risk getting others harmed. She's actually extremely lucky that this assassin is an incompetent one for not being able to accept her strength (even though she took him down earlier) and decided to attack her in such a simple and direct way. I actually think that the dude is a shame for all professional assassins.

wasn't he poisoned though? might not be in the right state of mind and was being used as a casus belli to go after the actual person ordering her assassination

Hmm maybe, because they never explained what kind of poison it was. I guess it may have been a poison that deteriorates his mental faculties. That would explain his stupidity.
Step 1: Catch assassin that tries to kill the maid (not the FL) to cause discord between the dukes' families.
Step 2: Let the assassin to lay a trap (supposedly for their employer?)
Step 3: Lure the assassin in a back alley (because somehow now his target is the FL) while the ML and his guard wait in ambush
Step 4: Kill the assassin
Step 5: ???????????
There is no point to this convoluted mess. Killing the assassin at step 1 would have had the same result.
