I think it may be that he witnesses some sort of suspicious behavior, but he misunderstands what it is, and they end up preparing incorrectly, something like that... there's such a wide range of potential foul play available to them, but a lot of it isn't the sort of thing that's easy to understand just from watching practices, especially if the idea is that they'll do it sneakily during the actual duel.
