Some sort of intelligent undead monster, at the very least. As PsyFarrow said, a revenant would almost make sense, but I don't think this series is going to get too deep into the weeds about undead nomenclature (though I would be very happy to be proven wrong on this point, mind you), so it's not something we should worry about.
