Those strategists were not supposed to gather annually for a board of war management meeting, were they? It looks like anyone who tried to stray from designated path would be removed by them, while their lords were kept as simple figureheads.

But no. Just like the chapter revealed, in tripartite state, each side will have 2 enemies. The strongest side will be hunted by the weaker 2. At first, the strongest is Cao Cao. Now that Cao Cao is weakened, the strongest one is Sun Clan. So, it's time for Sun Clan to get bitten...

True. Sun clan will get bitten because they can't keep their zeal in check. Or we could say Zhao Yu must be removed because his aim is Sun clan's supremacy, not working for people. By that definition, he's in the same vein as 3 other geniuses: Yuan Fang -- worked for his own gain; Xun Yu -- supported Imperial Han; Guo Jia -- all for Cao Cao. It's not coincidence that all the survived guys have very questionable loyalty (or half-baked loyalty at best), right?
After his death, those schemers might keep Sun clan relatively-strong-but-manageable to balance things out.

Hmmm... Dunno about Xun Yu... I think Xun Yu is removed (by Cao Clan, not by geniuses) because he's kinda become a thorn for Cao Cao to totally usurp Imperial Han's power to create his own kingdom. Zhuge Liang knew this n tried to take advantage by asking Xun Yu to help in officially announcing Sun Clan as a general again (instead of a rebel) in previous chapter as bargaining chip.
Xun Yu also agreed to the scheme because Zhuge Liang is also considered as a loyalist, so what Zhuge Liang did will benefit Imperial Han in general (n in turn benefit the imperial uncle). So keeping Han status Quo is like the best solution for Geniuses who supports tripartite so far.
