Nah, it's very believable. When a man's at their lowest, you can tell them what they want to hear and they'll trust you over anyone else because you're the only person that's making them hurt less. My ex used that trick all the time.

It's not dumb in the story but a highlight of dumb they are . Remember from the start they've never trusted anyone but themselves, add to that they've always seen mc as the 'wrong side' and that everything bad will be related to him.
