It's only chapter 3, and MC is already WAY too arrogant because of a cheat skill.
This already felt like a rip-off of "I got mistaken as genius actor", and now MC feels like a douche. I'll give it a few more chaps tho
Exactly! I've read up to chp 25 and he annoys me so much with how fake and entitled he feels! He's so arrogant! He sees certain, honestly probably decent roles("scores under 70%" iyk what i mean lol) are too lowly for him - an actor with no experience - right off the bat! He acts as if he deserves everything he's getting, and gets upset that he can't be a lead actor after a
single acting gig as if he wasn't so shit before that he had to use
literal magic to get any roles. It's portrayed as unending ambitiousness but even that overconfidence feels completely unearned. And i see the start of a trend where everyone else who should be in his place just becomes a 1 dimensional asshole to justify him taking their spotlight instead of getting any actual character or depth to them?
The whole first arc I was just praying for antagonist guy not to fuck up and create a scandal so big that the mc can just outright steal the role from under his nose (as is a very common cliche in these manhwas) since the longer he stays, the more likely we are to get some backstory for why he became such a massive pos. There are obviously parallels between the old mc and him that could be explored, and an exploration of the drastic shift in mindset (beyond others saying he let fame go to his head - i want specifics people!) when he was seemingly the last person who would this sort of things originally would be so fun! Was it a specific event, a natural progression over the course of a few dramas, something innate that he just felt less of a need to hide? Didn't he and mc use to be friends or smthn? Why is his inferiority complex now so profound that he gets so flustered, so on edge just by looking at mc that he actively ruins his own prospects? Like at least one flashback would be fine! but every chapter he got worse and worse for no good reason! Does he want to tank his career?? They keep alluding to things without expanding on it, and every time they doI can literally feel the potential for nuanced character development slipping from my grasp TT
Even that first guy he won the train drama role from- he was just a guy?? The author wants us to hate him, to think he's fake and looking down on the mc, but literally everything he did was normal! He discretely smiled all evil like occasionally so that the author can make sure we don't accidentally start liking him, but every instance of him actually looking down on people or being mean was just the mc projecting a hateful attitude onto him, assuming what hes thinking and feeling, to the point where if I didn't know any better I mightve thought the author was going with the (much cooler) plot twist that the mc's insecurities and ambition made him see things that wasn't there! I know he was just supposed to be a mini little side character who's really good at hiding his disdain for others, but it doesn't feel as natural as it should.
Sorry for the rant 😅
Anyways, ignoring that tangent, the mc is the least interesting thing about this manhwa - no talent, no hard work, just scheming and "ambition" while fame and connections literally fall into his lap. It feels like the entire story bends to his will to make him look cooler or more justified at the expense of the other characters, and honestly? I like everyone else EXCEPT the mc at this point. it really does just feel like 'i got mistaken as a genius actor' if kang woojin was a little bit more manipulative and unlikable lol
Edit: I don't even dislike him that much! He's serviceable enough, can be pretty funny, etc. I'm just not a big fan, and I like to go on long rants about minor grievances I have even when they don't affect me much in reality lol. I just use him as a vehicle to learn about the world and other characters at this point, even if said world and characters are cliche. The rare acting scenes are also pretty fun ig
