A lot of Christian Europe, Roman and Orthodox, thought cats were unlucky throughout the middle ages and beyond. Jewish and Islamic influence lessoned that a bit in the larger cities, but peasants will be peasants.

So I tried googling about cat bringing bad luck in sailing, and.... Yeah, you're screwed Soviet Navy.... Because most of the results said that it is actually a good omen to bring cat into a ship, and you must keep them happy. If you throw the cat off of the ship, storm will come. Well, at least for the UK region. Maybe it's different in Russia?
