The text is more so alluding to developing a fear of other cars driving recklessly on the road rather than being a passenger. Regardless, I too was like "bro has never driven a car for more than five minutes before" when I read that, especially since Northdin is totally the type to death grip a grab handle if forced to be a passenger princess.
