Pathetic delusional MC not living in reality and thinking he's trapped by the code of the game, when there's nothing stopping him from doing whatever he wants since he's living in that world and not playing a game. Sylvia is the superior choice to support since her talent matches his killer, her mindset is far superior, and her knowledge and competency as a mage are also far superior, but instead, the clown MC stuck himself to picking from the main cast(all of which probably want to kill him). The fact that he holds no animosity toward the people who want to kill him and finds no fault in helping them just shows what type of pathetic inferior mindset he holds- such a person who doesn't even dare to consider the actions to help himself and fight his enemies doesn't deserve to survive. Also, was it just the art or did the girl really complete the assignment by raging even though you need to be clear-headed for magic?
...Sylvia is just an average well-raised noble girl.
Epherene is catching up even though she lost all her resources and her dad.
Sylvia got 25 minutes, Epherene got 38 minutes, excluding the wasted 5 hours 47 minutes.
For a 3 hour assignment, Epherene is only behind by 13 minutes with her recovery.
The talent is there.
But more importantly, Sylvia has no need for support. Epherene, on the other hand, was in dire need of all sorts of support.
Sponsoring Sylvia wouldn't gain him much favor. Sponsoring Epherene is essentially monopolizing the favor of a potential Archmage.
To me, that's the most important bit.
Also, the fact that Epherene wanted to destroy his reputation is yet another reason to befriend her. He won't take the other route of killing a student to ensure his safety, so he's acting as a good teacher.
The reason isn't something like being arch-enemies, either. Epherene's dad killed himself after Deculein stole his research, so she blames Deculein a bit, and hated that he's taking credit for her dad's work. Since Deculein didn't explicitly kill her dad nor intentionally push him to suicide, it's probably not unforgivable. Epherene didn't even start with killing, she seemed to mostly want to expose Deculein for stealing credit and being a fraud who doesn't actually understand what he's supposedly a genius at.
As for the rage.. I'd say that was more like determination. Resolve. Even if it was a spiteful anger, she finally had the intent in her eyes to complete the task.
Plus, they even explained that this magic system heavily relies on instinctual talent to trailblaze into a specialization without spending huge amounts of time studying theory. That along with Deculein's comprehension ability granting him natural, subconscious understanding and at-will usage of some of his spells.. I would conclude that this world's magic doesn't necessarily require someone to be calm, cold, calculating, and 100% focused.
Ah, well. Basically, I think differently.
