Leaving them alive or otherwise in the same position just invites them to try again in the future after learning that the current tactic does not work.

Cut of the leg and then the other limbs as well. Do it to the senile fuck and the 5 rats too, then make them watch while you massacre their whole bloodline (min. 3 generations of their family line), and then finally offer them the peace of death through death to a thousand cuts.

Kill the other five too as accomplices. Considering the severity of the mother's crime, he doesn't even need to invent an excuse and just reveal he discovered they were guilty of breaking out one of the most wanted criminals in the country out of prison after the fact.

Their whole plan is so ridiculous it's close to being shameless ragebait, lol. I know that bits of conflict and drama are needed to spice things up and make overall wholesomeness stand out more. But this is kinda immersion-breaking...
Look, not every villain needs to have three sob stories and five dimensions to their character, but I'd expect more from the elders at least?

They were merely too blind and set in their ways. The duke has also pampered them, strenghtening their false beliefs and arrogance. Their assumption was that the duke also must, deep down, want to get rid of Melody, but hasn't simply found a way to do it smoothly. However, now that the elders did it, the duke probably wouldn't pursue the issue. One can only guess they have pulled off similar things in the past, although probably not anything quite as serious as this. People can do ridiculous looking things if their view of the world is far removed from reality. Kind of like in the numerous Youtube videos entitled people verbally attacking strangers for no reason, as if they lived in an alternate reality with no common sense.

The Duke swoops in for the rescue in the next chapter and her mother shows her true self in a really hard to watch way. I'm not much further ahead so I'm still wondering what will be done about the old man.
This doesn't really spoil much I think most could guess the events that happen next. But I do think the Duke loves her like his own child.
Also sorry for the lack of detail
But they throw a bag of gold to the mother and she shows how truly stupid she is. The guard just ends up taking it back from her anyway.

About the mistress thing and the idea of her father:
He's just a random guy, a lot of these stories usually reveal the main character is actually royalty, a noble or from some super special family...but nope, Melody's biological parents are just regular commoners even if she doesn't know who her father is, every one of the royal family gets accounted for even.
It's just the author trying to throw something knowing what people will expect and then taking it away...of course, this still leads to drama as some noble men do fall for Melody and the class status disparity is mentioned and no one can rely on sudden reveals of being a noble...because she ain't.
