It is Chinese Astrology. Birth pillars are the combination of the Chinese Zodiac based on the Year, Month, day, and hour your birth, I usually hear it called your 4 pillars. Mine are Rat, Horse, Monkey, Rabbit. Hour of the rabbit is 5am-7am for example. Each zodiac animal has an element assigned to it both yin and yang energy versions of those elements and based on the levels of each element they divine which energies you are strong in. It also will "predict" when you will struggle the most, mine said in my 60s. Your sex can also affect how your pillars are interpreted hence having your child crossdress, it happens quite a bit in Japanese manga but usually it is boys having better luck if raised as a girl to ward off bad juju.
