I could be getting this 100% wrong here, but there seems to be some homage to Little Miss Sunshine as well? I say this only because when Mari is looking at her food that is a person's face, she kind of looks like Olive. Hashi is like Dwayne (and has almost identical hair) but acts the complete opposite. Where Dwayne took a vow of silence, Hashi has no ability to do that. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but maybe some other stuff will come up later to disprove or strengthen my theory.
