Considering Japan’s complicated relationship with suicide combined with the protagonist apparently being considered ‘inedible’ due to her wish to live, could that be an element? Not so much suicide itself, as I doubt the sister and teacher were suicidal, but perhaps more that their life in the village came to an end. Like leaving the village in this manner is choosing suicide and the monster only consumes those that do so.
