The author has a problem with showing characters as 100% good or 100% bad. There seems to be very little grey area in his story, case in point how the mother was 100% scowls before they reached the target than happy and smiling after it.

Honestly, for me, this line alone cements the feeling that this drama was forced for the sake of drama. Cheap drama resolved by a grand gesture no less. There was a w h o l e month of effort the two of them have been exerting, it's abundantly apparent she made absolutely no effort in seeing their growth. Hinomori's especially.

If you really want to be that committed, keep demonstrating your further capabilities, however... should I judge that you have no potential, she'll be sent to study overseas immediately, be ready for that.
