That heartfelt speech from the Emperor... And Kaguya's blush at the end of it, just before she says 'you traitor' ... It kinda makes me think of a moment from another manga (Nisekoi), where the female lead, after a significant make-up moment with the male lead, smiled, blushing, while saying, "Of course... I hate you." ... clearly lying through her teeth and making the male lead's heart skip a beat, many many chapters before he ultimately realizes how he really feels about her.
But this moment isn't nearly as hopeful. It's still so tragic, because Kaguya disintegrates right before her love's eyes.
This 'Hachiyo' seems like an important plot thread that might come up later... miraculous pregnancies and births
And those soldiers are so callous about the fall of the Emperor. This seems to make it so he could have been a very short-lived and undocumented young Emperor some time before Emperor Kinmei. I'm noticing there's a couple of years gap between Emperor Keitai's rule and the rule of one of his sons that would work just fine within the year range I've decided this story has to take place during. And the records on such ancient emperors are supposedly not as clear, so there might be fudge-room to fit a forgotten and disgraced emperor into some span of a few years between 520 to 540 (specifically, from 531 to 534 is definitely unaccounted for on a list of emperors of Japan).
Also, whoa, whoa... who is that small person among the crowd on Pg.9? That character design seems far too distinctive. New and foreboding character introduced? That scar over their left eye is going to be hard to mistake. Or is that a cameo? If so, I definitely have no idea from what.
There's implication that we haven't seen the last of the Emperor's spirit, either. Maybe he has been reborn, as well, in the modern era, same as Shotoku/Nasa and Shizuka/Kurenai.
