A person of that level shouldn't be taunted by some silly insults. Grappling works to a certain degree, as long as you and your opponent have the same level of strength, it would work, but in this case it wouldn't. The opponent is much stronger then the mc. Keep in mind that the opponent has much more experience then the mc.

counterpoint: this is still a teenager who may know how to fight and are disciplined enough, but has also grown arrogant due to his abilities not being able to go up against much sturdier, skilled or stronger opponents as clearly evidenced by how he easily dispatched those thugs that he indeed bumped into and disrespected, him also stating that he hopes the protag would provide more than just entertainment.

also not being supported by the one he is clearly infatuated with is going to throw him off his game. I think his inner thoughts right now is why is she against me when I am doing this all for her in a roundabout way or that is how he tries to justify it to himself.

Dude you’re talking about an emotionally underdeveloped, arrogant, and hormonal teenager who’s idea of a “smart move” is to join a gang over going to college, going pro, or just simply being a chill person who doesn’t instigate and hangout with conceited, high school dropouts. Not a grown adult professional fighter with their priorities straight. On top of that it was already established that he ducked most of his grappling training. BINGO! A consistent theme with all of the main character’s Opponents is the fact that at the end of the day they are children who think they’re at the top of their social food chain.

This close minded mentality is 50% of the reason why they get the rug pulled out from under them by a guy 3 weight classes under them. Who’s packing only a few months of practice/scheming. In fact it’s why a lot of wannabe tough guys lose.

A striker who thinks they can just beat everyone before they can get in grappling range is cocky enough to be beatable. It’s just not gonna be easy.
