where did the alternate incorrect spelling come from?

This feels like someone from Game Freak wanted to write a Pokémon spin-off but didn't get it approved, so they changed it to Mythical Beasts and went on from there. Like, if you told me the MC is actually a minor character from Black/White 2, I would believe you immediately.
