Interesting seeing a complete opposite of the usual take on Marisa and Reimu's relationship than what is common in fanon. It is usually Marisa that feels inferior to and jealous of Reimu.

A lot of people dislike Reimu's characterization in this, but to be honest I feel this is kind of a breath of fresh air

I really just can't think deep into this. The disbelief hits me whenever I imagine all the logistics for spell card rules to work in Gensokyo. Those little details are very difficult to rationalize.

Like, shit, this is clearly the "first" version of the rules. Only random crits are perfectly fair and balanced. Nothing else is. What if somebody finds a way to cheese the current system? They'll have to spread new rules like that again. And new rules sets a precedent implying that the current rules might not be perfect. People will start using homebrew rules then.

And then there's the matter that beauty is subjective. I, for one, think glorious melee combat is beautiful. But if the people of Gensokyo don't think so, am I breaking the spirit of the spell card duels then?

I really applaud Azmaya showing her take on this, most certainly inspiring other people (including me) to shimmy in and think about their own interpretation of the spell card rules.

I mean, Meiling literally incorporates kicks in her spell cards, so melee is completely legal.

And I'd assume breaking the rule would result in the people of Gensokyo (Reimu and the powerful Youkais especially) ostracising you and hunting you down like with Seija in ISC. It's all about the delicate balance after all.

Feels so strange for Reimu to be weak enough to be scared of a stage 1 boss like Rumia

To be quite honest, I thought this manga was going to be about Reimu becoming strong enough to force the Spell Card Rules on the yokai.
Having them just easily accept it without fuss is genuinely anticlimactic.
