Apparently the umbrella will explode, and then the lightning will go down the lightning rod afterwards. This might actually be a good thing, in the sense that visible damage to the umbrella when the village is safe would serve as proof that the charm "worked" (assuming the umbrella itself doesn't cause additional damage), which can lead to more faith.

Come to think of it, she is among the most likely in Gensokyo to make a gun. Access to Kourindou can get her old ones from the outside, and she has experience with alchemy, and therefore can make gunpowder, or just fuel it with mushrooms and magic.

Reminder that Gensokyo got separated from the outside world in 1885 - rifles like this would have been well known and available to its inhabitants, and given the fact that even before the Hakurei Barrier was raised, the village was home to many hunters of youkai and other monsters, it stands to reason that quite a number of firearms would have been in circulation (let alone those in the possession of local farmers and hunters). Who knows, there might even be a gunsmith in the village, it would be a worthwhile job in a mostly self-sustaining rural community like this.

I do highly enjoy Marisa with a gun.
She really just went on a side quest for the entire chapter.

Also, it was in this manga where it was mentioned in some way Marisa might want to become a magician (thus a youkai) wasn't it? Now this, it could be just a gag but she went a couple of days into solitude and already came out half a hermit?

Bold of you to assume that a matchlock gun would be enough to take ANY of the youkai down. If Satori can tank a sword piercing her chest from Flandre of all people, I highly doubt early firearms would do anything more than a flesh would on all but soon-to-be youkai. Even if not, no way in hell would Yukari let something like that fly.

Not all youkai are immune to physical trauma. You could take down, say, a tengu with a lucky wing shot. Even a legendary youkai like Nue was said to be brought down by an arrow. At the very least, guns could make some of the factions treat humans more fairly.

Of course, I'm against our 2hus getting hurt. I'm just curious if Kourindou has a secret armory, or if the kappa manufacture arms and munitions.
