The word “impassionate” is not a good choice. Yes, it can mean dispassionate, but it can also mean impassioned, which is quite the opposite; and in either use it is rare. A better choice here would be “dispassionate”.

As to the title of this chapter, while it might be taken as a reference to the novel by Umberto Eco, I take it as a reference to an idea meant to be captured by the title itself of the novel. The rose was once a symbol rich in meaning, but it had lost much of that meaning, and Eco thus used to symbolize lost meaning. (Yeah, rather meta, as they say.)
