Yeah, they did have her mention that they've known each other for a month now, but the anime never implied that in between those scenes, they've been seeing each other more frequently. The anime didn't depict enough how often they've been meeting. It seemed like they only met 2 or 3 times in the anime but in the manga it seems they've been meeting quite often
I read through the first volume of the light novel. Here's a summary:Look, I can't deal with sad stuff, and I see that tragedy tag. Someone just spoil everything for me?
I'm already crying wtfI read through the first volume of the light novel. Here's a summary:
When Fuyutsuki was a child she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her brain. She underwent surgery and it thought it was completely removed. However, a few years later it turns out the cancer has spread to her eyes. She underwent surgery again and had to go through chemotherapy but was left traumatized by the experience. She lost her eyesight from the complications of cancer.
She managed to recover and attends college where she meets Sorano, Hayase, and Narumi. She eventually falls in love with Sorano. One night, after the rain interrupts the school festival and the fireworks are canceled, Sorano is escorting Fuyutsuki back to her home. She takes the chance to kiss him before saying good night. Afterwards, she goes radio silent and her friends don't hear from her for over a week.
Meanwhile, Sorano is invited to a restaurant with Hayase and Narumi and after being egged on by the two of them, he loudly confesses that he likes Fuyutsuki and wants to date her. Hayase records the confession and sends it to Fuyutsuki but she doesn't respond.
As Sorano and Hayase are feeling dejected at the school terrace, Narumi bursts in and says he saw her at the hospital as he was passing by. Sorano and Hayase rush to the hospital and they find her playing the piano in the kids' ward. When they talk to her she says she doesn't know who they are and that she isn't a university student. Feeling depressed, the two of them leave the hospital.
It turns out that shortly after kissing Sorano, Fuyutsuki undergoes a check at the hospital and discovers that she has stage 4 metastatic liver cancer and her doctor estimates that her chance of survival is 5%. She listens to the video of Sorano's confession and smashes her phone because of the guilt of having someone fall in love with her when she's almost certainly going to die. She decides to feign amnesia to distance herself from Sorano/Hayase/Narumi so that she doesn't become a bad memory for them if she dies.
Sorano/Hayase/Narumi decide to become hospital volunteers to try and get closer to Fuyutsuki. The novel goes into how Fuyutsuki is struggling with the treatment (cuts her hair due to cancer treatment, feels ill when drinking water so she has an IV drip instead, how she is so weak she can barely walk, etc).
Sorano continues to persistently approach her and eventually finds Fuyutsuki's bookmark that got blown away by the wind earlier in the story. The bookmark has braille readings on it that details her goals, like attending a party, going shopping, finding friends, falling in love, etc. He returns the bookmark to Fuyutsuki and convinces her to set a new goal of seeing the fireworks display that Sorano/Hayase/Narumi are organizing for the hospital kids. As part of the fireworks display, they have the kids design a firework that they want to see and Sorano has Fuyutsuki design one too.
She manages to get slightly better before the fireworks but then her condition worsens again on the day of the fireworks. Sorano/Narumi/Hayase do a video call so that Fuyutsuki can hear the fireworks. She asks Sorano to describe the fireworks to her. The fireworks eventually gets to Fuyutsuki's design and she gets embarrassed at her firework design (it's a big love heart). Sorano also designed a firework (it's a design of Fuyutsuki) and instead of describing it to her, he confesses his love to her again.
Fuyutsuki breaks down and cries over the guilt of having someone fall in love with terminal cancer. She confesses that she was faking her amnesia but Sorano figured this out a while ago because of how she reacted when he returned the bookmark to her. He convinces her to set some new goals in life so that she can work towards recovering. She sets various goals:
There's a timeskip after this part but Fuyutsuki eventually gets diagnosed with breast cancer at ~45 years old and dies from it (I think she was ~19 years old at the start of the novel). She manages to achieve all her goals in life and leaves behind Sorano and their child.
- Wear a wedding dress
- Go on a honeymoon
- Have at least one child
- Go on lots of vacations
- etc
I recommend reading the novel if you can, you should be able to find it on Yen Press (or through other means on the internet).
