@tenshineko yeah, the extent of the injury was never explained, but probably spinal causing paralysis. Also never explained is Chikako's actual relationship. She could be a step-mother, but given her role in the story she seems more like a governess (nanny/bodyguard). Lots of gaps for sure on who and what happened.
