@broadsword80 personally, if someone from different gender suddenly introduce themselves to me with 'that' intention, I'd be uncomfortable. But if someone I know introduce them, I'd at least not be that weirded/freaked out.

Btw, this actually goes back in history too. Nobles / high society people can't be considered formally acquainted if there's no 3rd person who introduce them first. It can even be said as impolite to introduce yourself to stranger.
