I'm surprised at your making the prediction after you could already read its falsification. In any case, the prediction ran against the whole grain of the story, would have alienated the base of readers while attracting few replacements, and would had left the author, who exhausted his creativity long ago, with no formula to follow.

If you want to create a scenario where the protagonist forgives his bullies and becomes friends with them, don't make them do something that should be unforgivable.
