Update to speculation:
Based upon the teaser for volume 2, I'll revise the speculation.
While he didn't know, his parents do.
And while respecting the wishes of his uncle, etc., to keep it quiet, they will to as great an extent as they can extend hospitality and friendship to their niece.
And... he's starting to fall for her. That became clear in how he reacted to seeing her smile.
It's unclear so far how she feels about him, except that it's not negative.
His volunteering to provide a cover relationship while thinking she and his uncle are in a relationship so as to protect them from gossip can only be counted as a positive on her part; except, of course, for being ticked off at his misinterpretation of what is going on, but without knowing the real relationship, it's the logical conclusion for him to make.
