I feel like, in six simple words, this chapter really cuts to the heart of Musaka.
“You’re giving me too much credit.”
For Musaka, he’s trained Oguri, but he’s not Oguri’s trainer. Not sure he’s ever considered himself that, but certainly not since he heard Oguri say, I don’t remember the exact quote/chapter but it was along the lines of, ‘she doesn’t want to lose’ versus her saying ‘she wants to win.’
So here comes McQueen, begging to be taken on by the person who made Oguri, who made the Gray Monster, and for Musaka she’s asking the wrong person. Because asking someone who failed Oguri to train her is folly. McQueen really is giving Musaka too much credit (in his mind).
Because the person who made Oguri Cap the Gray Monster, the strongest Umamusume was Kitahara. All Musaka did was fail to take care of her.
As a side note, if the anime ever reaches this point, I’m going to be fascinated on how they direct Musaka Voice Actor to say that line (and the proceeding one of Give it up.) Is it angry? Sad? Resigned? Or his usual gruff self? Because I can see it working any of those ways. (Might be obvious if I could read the original Japanese, but if I could I would not be waiting for it to be translated on Manga Dex.)
(Also, seeing as McQueen irl would change jockeys from Koichi Uchida to Yutake Take after winning the Kikuka Sho, quite interested to see if she’s going to land as Fumino Nase’s next trainee. Might be a fun little nod to Fumino Nase’s real life counterpart.)
