The Legend of Maian was finished, though (but the ending seems to be pretty nasty stuff, basically horrifying).
And it was pretty obvious that the ending wouldn't be good from the beginning, the whole story brimmed with hopeless cases for the character roster, who were one way or the other badly affected.
It was basically a "tragedy" in the classical way of definition, where everything is working towards the catastrophe [which is inevitable, it's "fate"] and everything falls to ruin for the main characters.
Analyzing it and viewing it from that perspective, the story wasn't so bad to be honest. You just weren't prepared for the thing because you don't initially realize that it's a tragedy in the classical sense but rather think it's a half-baked story common in 90%+ of the manga out there, blurring your view for the true meanings.
