My guess: he's going to "revive" having been parasitized by the fungus. I'm guessing that same thing happened to the locals who made all the comments and had the weird smiles.

i like this arc already, not only do we know paranormal stuff happens, there's already a loophole figured out by the employer. Usually its Yume and Hama figuring out the loophole to escape, this time they're going to dig even deeper.

Yeah I don't think he planned on dying, actually he probably will survive once he gets dragged back to the area. It's Yume who now has the ball in her court, as she now has a hidden specimen in her possession.

I honestly am not sure though how she's supposed to be fine.

Huh. That 'face' kind of shape looked like the one in the city... that feels unusual. Usually these cases don't feel like they really have connecting threads, outside the 'colors' that mark some of them. And even then that feels more thematic.
